I had high expectations for Alpha Protocol and really hoped it was going to be a blockbuster but with my objective reviewer hat firmly in place, I just cannot ignore the game many faults. I believe this opinion would be shared by the majority of gamers; however, Alpha Protocol is an original RPG that makes a refreshing and welcomed departure from Science Fiction and Fantasy settings. • an RPG not set in a Sci-Fi or Fantasy setting, unique and innovative conversation mechanic, good storyline with multiple endings, good character development options
    • abysmal graphics, serious lack of loot, linear level design, lazy basic game design, buggy and frustrating in places

Unfortunately, the basic gameplay mechanics prevent the wealth of options from getting the justice they deserve. It's clear from the moment that you move around in Alpha Protocol that something isn't quite right. You control Mike from a third-person perspective, but the camera is often zoomed rather close to him, which is a hindrance to taking in your surroundings or navigating close spaces. Read more

Value None. That’s all I can say about this. Alpha Protocol has absolutely no value in a time of the Red Dead’s, Alan Wake’s, Split/Second’s and Dragon Age’s of the gaming world. Whatever your interest in this game, there is surely something more intriguing and far more enjoyable that you haven’t played yet. Why not try some Arcade titles instead? You can get a few of them for the full-price tag of this one. Read more

    • “Your Weapon is Choice”. That may be true, but in Alpha Protocol that’s your only weapon. For a game based around the choices and action of a world-class Spy, it doesn...

Despite all that, I can't honestly say Alpha Protocol is not engaging, I just had to learn to work within the games rules and flaws. Don't expect this to become as household among RPG fans as Obsidian's other titles but there are far worse ways to eat a weekend. Pros RPG elements are well realised. Storyline, levelling up, gearing and regearing will offer a familiar time-sink. Cons Some clumsy and often frustrating game mechanics. Read more

    • Some clumsy and often frustrating game mechanics. Neither combat nor stealth feel completely realised.
