While Super Mario Galaxy is not the giant leap forward in gaming we got from Super Mario 64, it stands as a perfect culmination of all the best elements of both Mario titles in general, and platforming as a genre. Each puzzle is unique and challenging, but never once over-bearing or contrived. The game’s pacing is nothing short of perfect while the setting offers unparalleled access to any number of varying puzzle/platform/action- ing ideas. Read more

Super Mario Galaxy is an amazing feat, a world of exploration that will keep anyone entertained for hours. The large amount of stars assure a solid length of many worlds, each as exciting and interesting as the last. The characters and Nintendo charm is immeasurable, the Luma star characters alone carrying enough cutesy charm to bring the toughest biker thug to tears. Read more

There's no denying it. Super Mario Galaxy is the best Nintendo game since Mario 64, and one of the top two 3D platformers ever made. The other? Take a wild guess. Pros Jaw-dropping physics, consistent level originality and an all-out masterpiece of visual design and musical composition. This is as good a Mario game as any. Cons There aren't any worth mentioning. Read more

    • There aren't any worth mentioning. To do so would simply detract from the obvious notion that Super Mario Galaxy is a masterpiece of the very highest order.

For effectively as long as gaming has been around, Mario platformers have set standards for everyone else to try and meet. Not just within the platformer genre either, all games aim to emulate the quality of a Mario game, with their tight controls, imaginative gameplay, beautiful graphics or even just tunes that’ll stick in your head. Shhh! Don’t say it out loud in case the fanboys hear you, but Mario’s last adventure - Super Mario Sunshine on GameCube - wasn’t that good, and diluted the delirious platform hopping of earlier excursions to the Mushroom Kingdom by giving players a rubbish jetpack. But in Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo devotees finally have a game worthy of being considered the spiritual successor to Nintendo’s hallowed genre classic, Super Mario 64. Read more
