For $699, Panasonic brings you the LUMIX DMC-FT1, which you can drop on the ground, in the snow, in the water and on the sand, without damaging it. It's the company's first toughened camera, and the only rugged camera on the market to date that's also capable of shooting high-definition video. We first played with the pre-production model of this camera in February and were largely impressed with its features, user-friendliness and picture quality. Read more

    • Waterproof down to 3m, shockproof up to 1.5m, can record HD video at 1280x720 pixels, versatile focusing modes
    • Has a zoom slider instead of buttons, slow shooting performance, poorly placed rotational dial, no tap controls, a little pricey

The Lumix DMC-FT1 represents a new concept for Panasonic: a tough, slimline digicam that is shockproof to 1.5 metres, waterproof to a depth of three metres and dustproof to the IP58 standard. Olympus has already been down this 'tough camera' track but Panasonic is the first manufacturer to add the ability to record high-definition movie clips in the new AVCHD Lite format with a frame rate of 30 frames/second. It’s not the most rugged, waterproof or compact of its kind. And its photos aren’t the best. But for some reason I really like this camera. Maybe I’m wrong. Read more

Don't buy one of these. First time underwater (all of 0.5 m, in my pocket) it leaked. 2 months outside of 12 month warranty. Panasonic NZ wouldn't honour any warranty, and said it was because of dirty seals AND the seals had not been replaced (which according to them has to be done every 12 months, at over $100 per time!). You can't tell if its going to leak until it does, then it's too late! Read more

    • OK pictures (not at high iso though). Good video
