The superzoom cameras seem to be aimed at the customers who buy by numbers. A decent 600mm lens for a DSLR costs thousands of dollars and is used for specialised applications, firmly mounted on a rigid tripod. Anyone who thinks that for a few hundred dollars they are getting a quality 600mm lens that can be handheld is deluded. However, up to the mid point of the zoom range the P100 works well enough. • The image quality from the P100 is acceptable in the wide to medium section of the zoom, although a little soft and with warm white balance. At the 678mm extreme image...
    • The electronic viewfinder is of such low resolution that it is only for use in bright sunlight when the LCD turns black. A 678mm lens cannot be used hand-held, even wi...

The Nikon CoolPix P100 is a likeable superzoom camera that weighs a scant 419g (with battery) and has an incredible 26x optical zoom. It's also a 24mm wide-angle camera that can capture vast vistas - we got it to take a very broad shot of the sweep of the Thames and were impressed with the breadth of detail it could encompass. We were also pleased to discover a superior build quality on the Nikon CoolPix P100 than on its predecessor, the P90. Read more

    • Great video mode, good value for money, 26x zoom
    • Tilting screen is a little stiff, indoor shots aren't always fantastic

    30 March 2010

Released a year after the Coolpix P90, Nikon's Coolpix P100 is a next-generation super-zoom model with the same SLR-like styling as its predecessor. However, it adds some features and special shooting modes to attract a wider range of potential purchasers. Although sensor resolution has been (sensibly) reduced, the zoom range is longer and the adjustable LCD monitor has higher resolution. Read more

The zoom is great for a smallish camera that fits on my belt. At least it has a viewfinder. I'm not happy with the speed ie I'm taking action footy photos and the time it takes to take another shot at the higher quality setting is distressing - the ball has moved on and I can't even track it in the view finder let alone take another picture. Sports mode is junk as it locks up the camera for too long and uses low res mode. Read more
