The big story here is that Canon has heeded the critics of the G10. Reviewers loved that camera’s retro design and logical ergonomics. But they hated the 14 megapixel sensor. Panasonic’s LX3 won the competition for best serious compact with 10 megapixels. Fewer pixels meant better noise handling and slightly better dynamic range. Canon responded in a way that we have never seen before in the camera business – they actually reduced the pixel count! Read more

    • This camera is a joy to use. It is bigger and heavier than other compacts but this makes it feel like a real camera. Image quality is excellent, even up to ISO800. Aut...
    • Hmmm. A hard one. Well, nothing. For a small sensor compact this is as good as it gets.

The Canon PowerShot G11 is an advanced compact camera you can turn to if you don’t want to buy a digital SLR. Despite its small size, it has a lot of SLR-like features, such as the ability to change exposure settings on the fly. Of course you can’t swap out lenses nor manually zoom and focus the way you can with an SLR. Read more

    • Full manual control, pivoting screen, good high ISO performance for a compact camera
    • Buttons feel spongy, no fine control over zoom, noticeable barrel roll at the wide angle, slightly soft images, no bulb mode

The bridge market between point-and-shoot compacts and entry-level DSLR’s has become more and more competitive over the last couple years. With many companies concentrating a stronger effort on the Micro Four Thirds technology and offering great value with their entry-level DSLR’s, delivering the highest level of image quality, at a consumer-friendly price, is starting to win over the ‘more... Canon surprised many industry observers by replacing the 14-megapixel PowerShot G10 with the 10-megapixel G11 model. However, this move makes sense because image noise was an issue with the G10 at ISO 400 and most photographers should appreciate having fewer - but larger - photosites that deliver better image quality. Nevertheless, the sensor remains pretty small (7.6 x 5.7 mm) and, more surprisingly, the RRP has risen by $150 since the G10 was released. Read more

I'm not sure what to say but wow. 1 week, 400 photos and my DSLRs have just sat in my bag. This is deffinatly a photographers camera. The tilt and swivel screen works great for street photography, macro and just about everything else. By far the best images I have ever seen at high ISOs from compacts. I use Noise Ninja for noise removal and I have made good images all the way up to ISO 3200 which I have never seen from a compact. Read more
