The EOS 550D is an excellent way into the Canon system. It doesn’t have the luxurious feel of the 7D, but then it costs $1300 less for the body. Our test unit came with the Canon 18–135mm lens which is not good enough for the camera. We would recommend buying the body with a better – and, sadly, more expensive – lens. Read more

The Canon EOS 600D is a superb camera, but a botched attempt to appeal to HD video buffs mars the appeal. Here's our review. Read more

Canon's EOS 550D digital SLR camera is a marvel: it represents a product that makes very few sacrifices in image quality in order to satisfy mainstream users after something affordable. It is aimed users new to the digital SLR category, yet its specifications are quite high. Not only does it have a massive 18-megapixel sensor, it also boasts Full HD video recording, very high ISO capability and a fast burst mode. Read more

    • Excellent high ISO performance, great for shooting in dark environments, good burst mode, Full HD video recording
    • Slow focusing at times, inaccurate focussing at times

Canon's EOS 550D slips into the company's line-up between the EOS 500D and the EOS 50D and offers higher resolution than both models without displacing either. It boasts the same 18-megapizel sensor as the EOS 7D but has only one DiG!C 4 processor. A key feature is the addition of a new, high-resolution 3:2 aspect ratio LCD monitor and a redesigned interface. Read more

The entry-level DSLR market has become one of the most competitive across the DSLR range. And few would disagree that what consumers are after from a DSLR is a little different to what professionals and, even, enthusiasts are looking for. Canon has once again announced itself as a company that is willing to push the casing of their entry-level DSLRs to breaking point. Read more

I use this camera for video, and it's great. Really good quality. However because it is a bit smaller than the 7D's etc, it isn't all that comfortable to hold for long periods. Read more

I had a 1000D previously, and altho the supplied lens is identical, the image quality ion the 550D s noticeably better. The 550D has excellent image quality and colour and in all light. Speaking of - the increased ISO works great. 3200 is actually quite usable. However, shooting video has been a big let down. Reviews always make it sound great. Even this one. It's not. The auto focus is too noisy to use, and any sort of zoom it quickly becomes jittery. Read more
