The SLR market has been heating up in recent months, with the category's two big guns slinging several punches at each other in the form of new products. Canon is the latest to land a blow with its new and improved mid-range unit, the 50D. The successor to the 40D, this unit packs a wallop with a huge 15-megapixel resolution, as well as a greatly improved screen and the option for an optically stabilised kit lens. Read more

Canon's new 15.1-megapixel EOS 50D is a 'big brother' model to the popular EOS 40D (which remains in the company's line-up) and a 'little brother' to the coming EOS 5D Mark II. Offering higher resolution than the 40D, it has a new DIGIC 4 image processor, which supports 14-bit image processing, improved noise reduction and 30% faster processing times. It also delivers continuous shooting speeds of up to 6.3 frames/second with a UDMA CompactFlash card. Read more

This is a 15-megapixel single-lens reflex, supplied with an 18-200mm lens with effective optical stabilisation. This is the evolutionary replacement for the 40D, with more pixels and a high resolution 75mm LCD to bring it into line with Nikon and Sony competitors. The 15mp sensor is matched to the new Digic4 image processor that Canon claims eliminates any noise problems resulting from increased pixel density. Dust is removed automatically. Read more

I upgraded from 20D; what a jump! Great camera. I love the flexibility to assign menu items and functions to different buttons. The buttons on the back are sensitive, more than the 20D, so that I have to switch off the camera if I carry it around. Read more
